Parents Concern
Education Support to orphans at Tooro high school.

Overview, the orphans’ education support project aims at providing quality and improved educational services tot improve the lives of orphans and other vulnerable children through provision of school fees and basic scholastic materials. The beneficiaries consist of children who lost their parents and later were abandoned. Most of these children have been abused and have gone through a lot of suffering. Our goal was to bring them together, restore their hope and give them meaningful care, love and support and enable them live to their full potential.

This project entails support to orphans through provision of school fees, scholastic materials (books, pens, mathematical sets and pencils) and school uniforms. In a bid to consolidate this effort, all the supported orphans from Kamwenge, Kabarole and other parts were brought together at an orphanage school, by this their needs and aspirations will be met. With support GFR, National Physician Centre and other well-wishers, the program has so far supported over 83 orphan students at Tooro high orphanage school located in Fort Portal municipality off Kampala rd. along Kitumba-Kataraka road. These supported orphans are mostly adolescents aged 14-18 years and are between S.1-S.4. Most probably there will be S.5 next year 2009.

The challenges & needs, as much as we are supporting these orphans at Tooro high school, the support is only limited to education, these kids much more help than we may think, for example, the girls may need regular supply with sanitary towels, these girls end up using dirty pieces of cloths, papers and this put them at risk of contracting Candida and other infections, these kids miss out classes when they are in their menstrual cycles, in addition the orphans need blankets, mattresses, basins, clothes, tooth pastes and other incidentals like soap, jelly etc.

The fact that some of these orphans are HIV positive, feeding them is often problematic, they need good nutrition as recommended by doctors and the program can not afford this, they need care and comfort, counseling services but these services can not be obtained easily due to the costs involved. The school lacks enough facilities within its setting as recommended by the Ministry of Education (MoE) and risk closure, for the program to move well, the school requires a science and computer laboratory, a library, a girls and boys dormitories, a sick bay, a school administration/office, a little more land to accommodate all the required facilities, a sports play ground and fencing. There’re an ever increasing number of orphans and guardians flocking the office seeking for support, in fact we have already registered over 287 more orphans that deserve absolute support.

Our hope and prayer is that God touches many more caring people to support and respond to the plight of orphans. With God’s assistance we hope that all the education, physical and psychological needs will be met.
